Autumn was shading into winter, when the daylight looked pale and sickly and it seemed to hurt the sun to rise for a few hours and a girl's thoughts naturally turned to wool. And soup.

This latter inclination had led Lydia to select Pho Pasteur for tonight's Supper Club. She was debating whether or not to get tripe. She hadn't had tripe in ever such a long time.

It was definitely that time of year when Rey was going around in layers and a too-big coat she'd definitely stolen/been given by one of the boys at home. Which was why she decided, "This feels perfect for today."

Henry blinked at her. "Where'd you get that?" he asked. "That must be incredibly comfortable."

"What, the cost?" she asked, looking down at it. "I borrowed it from a friend until he gave it to me."

"Ah, so nothing I could get easily, then," Henry sighed. "It is getting a bit chilly."

Neither his home clothes nor Shenanigans t-shirts could handle this weather.

"There are some clothing stores on the island," she pointed out. "Or out here."

"I don't have any money," Henry started. Then paused. Frowned. "Wait, those paper things you move around, those are coin, aren't they?"

Please excuse him, he'd only had a job for about a month.

Oh, Henry no.

"That's money, yes," she said. "Would you like me to take you to get a coat? Show you how the money works?"

"I-- well, it can't be that different from what it was, can it?" Henry said, rubbing the back of his head.

He honestly had not known what to do with the bills.

"It's even different from country to country," she said. "And very different from what I know at home, so it took a bit to learn."

And American money was weird. Not that Rey knew this. But it was.

"Right," Henry said, clearly torn between a desire to be (normal) independent and the possibility of getting horrifically tangled in another modern thing. "Well, maybe, then..."

"Just let me know when," Rey said. "I have some things I need to get, too."

She didn't really. But she felt like she could pay first and he could see what she did.

"I thought it would be quite nice," Lydia agreed. "Soup suits the weather, does it not? And of course next week there's the whole--" she waved a hand vaguely. "Thing."

"Not a fan of Thanksgiving?" Rey asked, smiling a bit at that.

"It's just still quite new," Lydia explained. "It's not a thing we had in England." Where turkeys, pumpkins, and cranberries were also in short supply in her time.
